Lance Armstrong Wins 70.3 IRONMAN Florida

HAINES CITY, FLA. (May 20, 2012) – Today, Lance Armstrong (USA) and Jessica Jacobs (USA) took the titles at IRONMAN® 70.3® Florida. This was both Armstrong’s and Jacobs’ first IRONMAN 70.3 title.


David Kahn (USA) exited the water first followed by a chase pack that included Francesc Godoy (ESP), Andres Castillo (COL) and Armstrong. Kahn maintained his lead out of T1 and for approximately 20 miles of the bike. Armstrong moved into first position and dominated for the remainder of the race. He posted the fastest bike and run splits of the day, and crushed the competition by putting more than 10 minutes between him and second place. This race marked Armstrong’s first IRONMAN 70.3 title and fourth IRONMAN 70.3 top-10 finish.

3. Francesc Godoy ESP 3:59:45

Amanda Stevens (USA) exited the water with more than a minute and a half lead over Nina Kraft (DEU). Fiorella D’Croz (COL) and Ashley Clifford (USA) trailed Kraft out of the water, with the next female pro more than a minute behind them. Stevens maintained her lead throughout the entire bike course and into the first miles of the run. Jennifer Tetrick (USA) stole the lead briefly with Stevens, Jacobs and Kraft close behind – and separated by mere seconds. Despite tough competition in the last miles of the course, Jacobs pushed forward to earn the fastest run split of the day and claim her title.

More than 2,100 athletes from 34 countries started today’s event that kicked off with a freshwater, 1.2-mile swim in Lake Eva. Athletes tackled a challenging 56-mile bike course through rural citrus orchards in Polk County and finished with a scenic 13.1-mile run course around the lake and throughout Lake Eva Park. Today’s event offered a professional prize purse of $15,000 and 30 age group qualifying slots to the IRONMAN World Championship 70.3 taking place on Sept. 9, 2012, at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nev.
