Fourteen athletes earn titles at largest Paratriathlon Nationals event

AUSTIN, Texas — U.S. paratriathletes posted phenomenal performances on Monday en route to national titles at the 2013 USA Paratriathlon National Championship, held in conjunction with the Life Time Fitness Tri CapTex.

Athletes competing in seven divisions earned national championship titles as part of the largest field yet for a USA Paratriathlon National Championship. The 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike, 5-kilometer run course, centered at Auditorium Shores at Lady Bird Lake, showcased the talent emerging in the paratriathlon community.

“It’s my first time here, and what an excitement,” said Krige Schabort (Cedartown, Ga.), who won the TRI-1 division. Schabort may be new to the championship event, but like many of the other competitors has an impressive resume. He is a two-time medalist at Paralympic Games marathons in 1992 and 2000 and is also the current Ironman world record holder in his division.

“I’m more of a long-distance guy,” Schabort said, “But I really want to focus on this distance. It’s better for my lifestyle and for my family.”

Four athletes successfully defended their titles in their respective divisions — Melissa Stockwell (TRI-2, Chicago, Ill.), Mark Barr (TRI-2, Houston, Texas), Beth Price (TRI-3, Spanish Fort, Ala.) and Patricia Walsh (TRI-6A, Austin, Texas).

“It is so fantastic to be on the course and recognize a lot of the voices. I felt like we had a lot of really strong supporters out there. It’s like I’m running in my backyard,” said Walsh. “I couldn’t be happier, it was so much fun.”

Also claiming national titles Monday were Jacqui Kapinowski (TRI-1, Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.), David Kyle (TRI-3, Athens, Ala.), Tisa Cawthon (TRI-4, Monterey, Calif.), Christopher Hammer (TRI-4, Cheney, Wash.), Megan Fisher (TRI-5, Seattle, Wash.), JP Theberge (TRI-5, Elfin Forest, Calif.), Israel Antonio (TRI-6A, Chicago, Ill.), Diane Berberian (TRI-6B, Clearwater, Fla.) and Aaron Scheidies (TRI-6B, Seattle, Wash.).

Top athletes in Monday’s race will be considered for spots on the 2013 USA Paratriathlon National Team, as well as the opportunity to represent Team USA at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in London, England, on Sept. 11. Interest in paratriathlon is at an all-time high and the sport continues to grow following its inclusion in the Paralympic Games program. Paratriathlon will make its debut at the Paralympic Summer Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, a driving force for newcomers and experienced paratriathletes alike.

“It means a lot to be a part of this sport,” said Fisher, who won gold and silver medalists for Paralympic cycling events at London 2012. “I was involved in it 6 or 7 years ago and it’s grown tremendously. It’s been such a wonderful thing to see, people becoming inspired and empowered by watching other people and just getting out there. I really appreciate the perspective that I’ve had.”

Theberge, the TRI-5 winner, made his return to the sport this year after taking a year off for knee surgery. Like Fisher, Theberge is thrilled to see the growth of the sport with Rio on the horizon.

“It’s a competitive sport and it’s going to get more competitive, and that’s awesome,” he said. “I’m very excited to be part of it, having grown up in the sport.”

Once again, an open Physically Challenged Division was contested in addition to the national championship wave to help meet the needs of the growing number of paratriathletes across the country. Athletes in the open division were not eligible for awards or world championship consideration.

Paratriathlon Nationals was the second race of the 2013 Can-Am Paratriathlon Race Series, a premiere North American racing circuit for elite paratriathletes in the United States and Canada. The event will also contribute to scores in the 2013 USA Paratriathlon national rankings.

Scenic courses will take cyclists of every skill level through legendary back roads in Jefferson, Gilpin, and Boulder Counties

Event kicks off June 22 with DocuWest’s “Big Ride Double Feature” cycling film screening at Golden’s Foss Theater

GOLDEN, CO – May 28, 2013 – Building on its long history of hosting world-‐class cycling experiences, the city of Golden and Gran Fondo National Championship SeriesSM (GFNCS) will stage the Golden Gran Fondo on June 23.

A gran fondo is a European-‐style cycling challenge that takes bicycle racing to the next level through a hybrid of competitive road racing and casual century rides. The GFNCS 2013 circuit makes its fourth stop in Colorado with courses covering 20, 60 and 90 mile journeys through the legendary Rocky Mountain foothill roads of Jefferson, Gilpin, and Boulder counties. Highlights include Lookout Mountain with spectacular views across the Front Range, climbs towards the Continental Divide via the Peak to Peak Highway and 12,000 cumulative feet of climbing before returning to Golden.

Riders will bike roads featured in the movie American Flyers, Kevin Costner’s classic cycling film that was set in Golden and which will be screened the night before the race. The Golden Gran Fondo features four timed sections, prizes for overall mileage and age group winners, as well as fully stocked aid stations along the route. A portion of the registration fee will be donated to fund outdoor activities for Gilpin County fifth graders.

“The Golden Gran Fondo will take racers on a spectacular circuit through the Rocky Mountains,” said Reuben Kline, founder and president of the Gran Fondo National Championship SeriesSM. “From the starting line in beautiful downtown Golden the event traces the route of the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge and some of the same roads traveled in the Coors Classic. This course is sure to test a cyclist’s climbing prowess while experiencing some of the most ruggedly beautiful landscapes anywhere.”

In addition to the race, GFNCS has partnered with DocuWest to present on Saturday June 22 the “Big Ride Double Feature” – a free, family-‐friendly twin bill of the classic cycling films: American Flyer (1985) and Ride The Divide (2010).

“DocuWest is excited to present these two acclaimed films, both of which have deep Colorado roots,” said Wade Gardner, co-‐founder and director of programming. “Golden is known as ‘where the west bikes’ and was selected as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Cyclists. As the home for great film in Golden, we anticipate an enthusiastic crowd.”

The double feature begins at 6:00 pm at the Foss Theater in the American Mountaineering Center, 710 Tenth Street, Golden. Admission is free and open to the public. Golden Gran Fondo riders can bring proof of registration for reserved seating. Kline, Denver-‐based filmmaker Mike Dion and producer Joe Cantwell will be on hand to present Ride The Divide and take part in a Q&A session following the screening.

The Golden Gran Fondo will start and finish at Parfet Park, 719 10th Street, Golden. There is a 500-‐person field limit to ensure safe riding conditions for all participants. Registration is available online now at www.goldengranfondo.eventbrite.com, or in person on Saturday June 22 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at Peak Cycles 1224 Washington Avenue Golden, and from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Foss Theater. The race begins at 8:00 am on Sunday June 23.

Following the event on Sunday will be the Golden Festival and Vendor Expo. Based in Parfet Park, the venue will provide entertainment including vendors, food, drink, a Cruiser Criterium and a High Roller Big Wheel race.

May 28th, 2013

San Francisco, CA–Over 450 Aquathlon and swim participants endured cold weather, windy conditions and cold water to overcome the challenge of the Memorial Day Orca Alcatraz Challenge Swim.   With great anticipation, they jumped from the Hornblower California Boat at 8 a.m. as scheduled.  They were just off the south end of Alcatraz Island where the legend is that no one could escape the federal prison because of the currents, cold water and distance to San Francisco.   These swimmers were here to prove the legend wrong as they swam 1.5 miles in water with a 6 knot current.  They did have a little bit of an advantage as many wore wetsuits, had trained for months and had all the advantages of maps, charts and of course Google to give them all the latest data.

The hard core participants were the non-wetsuit swimmers, better known as the naked swimmers (although they did wear swim suits).  The overall winners of this division were:  Pietro Barlocco (37) Bergamo, Italy with a time of 35:09; second James Fittro (19) Seaside, CA, 36:56; and third Jonah Silva (15), Seaside, CA, 38:27.  For the women the winner was Madison Stander (14), Monterey, CA, 39:48; second Ava Vucina (17), Pacific Grove, CA, 39:57; and third Elaina Luke (23) from Menlo Park with a time of 41:00.

In the wetsuit division the winners were:  Josh Pitkofsy (18), from San Carlos with a time of 32:37; second, James Lewis (19), from Costa Mesa; and third Parker Costa (14), from Monterey at 33:54.  For the women overall winners was Kimberly Hermann (23) Houston, Texas with a time of 37:55; second Christina Hashimoto (13), Pacific Grove, 37:59; and third Clare McKenna (26), Carlsbad, 38:38.

Aquathlon

In the Aquathlon Division they swam the 1.5 mile swim and then ran 7 miles across the Golden Gate Bridge and back.  The female overall winners were:  Patricia Lai (31), San Francisco, 1:32:04; second Kristi Rossi (45), Hillsborough, 1:32:48; and third Susan Legacki (33), Encinitas, 1:36:04.

For the men:  Parker Smith (17), Seaside, CA with a winning time of 1:21:35, second Bryan Botma (27), San Clemente, 1:24:48; and third Matt Head (24), San Ramon, 1:25:42.

Athletes also competed for Age Group awards and Relay Team awards.  For a complete list of the results at http://raceresults.eternaltiming.com/index.cfm/20130527_Alcatraz_Challenge_Aquathlon_and_Swim.htm?Fuseaction=Results&Class=Aquathlon+Individual~Top20

The youngest competitor was 10 year old Madison Brown from Monterey, and the oldest was Neal Gillen, from Potomac, MD.
