Meet my new go-to helmet. New for 2012 is the Windmax from Rudy Project. This new helmet combines features I personally have been wanting for years. Light weight, aggressive styling, extreme ventilation, and it looks at home on the road as well as the trails.

I found some discrepancy in regard to the weight of this helmet. Rudy Project’s site states the helmet weighs 220g without accessories but the sticker in the S/M lid says 250g without accessories. Either way, it is a very light helmet and I am sure the details will be sorted once the helmet is available. The 22 vents offer great airflow through the helmet without any wind noise.>

Size adjustment is handled by the RSR8 Disc retention system which offers single handed adjustment of size. The system ratchets in smal increments allowing the desired fit to be easily acheived. The ratcheting motion is smooth overall but it does take a bit of force to ratchet it all way down. One innovative feature is the height adjustment of the retention system, which provides 3 levels of adjustment ensuring a comfortable fit. S/M size is 54-58cm and L is 58-62cm. I am a 58cm and tested the S/M lid. It fit very well without feeling too snug and was comfortable to wear for several hours of riding.

Included are 2 sets of padding inserts, one with a mesh system Rudy dubs Bug-Stop, and one without. Having been stung several times by bees while riding I am grateful for the protection the mesh provides.

The chin strap is comfortable and includes a pad to prevent rubbing that is well designed and not an afterthought like on many helmets.

One of my favorite features of the helmet is the detachable visor. A small aerodynamic road visor as well as a larger mountain bike visor are included and allow me to use this as my de facto helmet. I spend as much time riding the mountains as I do the roads, but I have always preferred the fit and comfort of road helmets to mountain bike helmets but didn’t like looking like a roadie on the trails.

With its $299 retail price, the Windmax ranks high on the price chart but given its features and versatility it is not a helmet to be overlooked. It is available in Black / Yellow Fluo / White Matte, Red / White / Black Shiny (tested), and White / Silver/ Red Shiny.
